As my wife can tell you, I am not a doctor and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, either. If a nurse is taking my blood, I turn my head. If I see blood on TV I turn my head. If someone mentions there might be a chance of seeing blood, I'll likely choose a different path (and turn my head, just to be on the safe side). So, why would someone like me set out to organize a medical mission to Haiti? The simple answer is, "It's not my idea."

 

There are a lot of people who travel to Haiti and other countries around the world and engage in a lot of helpful activities. In my mind, one of the things that makes faith-based missions different is that the goal(s) are not really our idea. In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus tells his followers, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

All I have done is try to answer that call. In order for me to be successful, I need to undertake particular tasks on mission. This year, those tasks include a backpack medical clinic.
